Building an Agile Community of Practice

Why does someone join a community of practice? Easy, they are keen to learn as much as they can, along with the desire to excel in their craft. When someone joins a community of practice, it is rare that they get to see what goes on behind the scenes. There are many considerations that go into creating a community of practice, and even more considerations when you want to keep people joining the sessions your team creates. This session will explore the journey of establishing the first and only community of practice in The Bahamas, the Bahamas Agile & Project Management Community.  You will hear firsthand from the organizers, the challenges faced, the successes and goals for the future.

Andrea Pratt-Smith is a Bahamian visionary who advocates for the empowerment of others through continuous learning, networking, and community building. After working in the private sector for over two decades, Andrea began her entrepreneurial journey and formed Creative Minds Project Development & Consultation where she provides project management consultancy services to a growing clientele locally and internationally. She is an experienced Agile Project Manager, Advanced ScrumMaster and the first Professional Kanban Trainer with ProKanban.org in the Caribbean region.

Omar Gonzalez Senior Product Owner at COFENSE

With over 15 years of experience in the IT sector, in multiple industries, Omar has been able to analyze, develop, implement, test, lead, and deliver projects and products in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. He started out as a developer coding in Cobol for one of the major healthcare providers in Puerto Rico. Years later, Omar discovered Agile and has grown into an all-around Agilist, working in both Scrum Master and Product Owner roles. Additionally, he has also taken key roles within several communities of practice where he has led and contributed to their success and has guided others in their agile journey.
